Lotus satisfied with race pace

Lotus said it was very satisfied with its race pace in Melbourne, even though it did not achieve its aim of catching the more established midfield teams in the season opener. The team spent the Australian Grand Prix weekend back in the position it had occupied through 2010 - beating Virgin and Hispania, but not quick enough to challenge those ahead. But Lotus technical chief Mike Gascoyne said the signs from Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen's race performance were very encouraging.

Di Resta delighted with GP debut

British rookie Paul di Resta says his Formula 1 debut was 'definitely worth the wait' after a strong showing in his maiden grand prix for Force India. The 24-year-old Scot outqualified his more experienced team-mate Adrian Sutil, and then ran ahead of the German in the race before moving over twice to allow for varying strategies. Di Resta finished in 12th bu was elevated to 10th after the Sauber drivers were disqualified.

Martinsville NiSWC Broadcast Tuesday

Round Four of the 2011 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship at Martinsville Speedway will be broadcast Tuesday, March 29 at 9 pm EST (March 30 at 01:00 GMT). So far this season, three races have produced three different winners with Ray Alfalla taking the opener at Daytona, Brad Davies winning at Las Vegas and, most recently, Thomas Hazard coming home the victor at Bristol Motor Speedway. Alfalla takes a slim lead in the championship to Martinsville over Hazard and Josh Parker, while defending NiSWC champion Richard Towler looks to rebound from a disappointing start to his title defense that sees him well down the standings. Will Martinsville mark a turn-around in Towler?s fortunes. Will Alfalla, Davies or Hazard become the first two-time winner in 2011? Or will somebody new come [...]

Teams say ?too soon? to judge rules

Formula 1's leading figures think it is too early to judge the success of this season's new rules, after the moveable wing, the return of KERS and Pirelli's rubber offered glimpses of potential in the Australian Grand Prix. Although the Melbourne event was not one of the most spectacular races ever, there was plenty of overtaking throughout the field - and even dominant winner Sebastian Vettel had to get past McLaren rival Jenson Button on track to secure his win. The new moveable wing did help produce a few passing moves on the start-finish straight, and there were varied strategies through the field that ensured the 2011 season did at least start much better than last year

Red Bull Racing insists it is not worried that mixed up races caused by high degradation this year may not allow it to make the most of the speed of its car. Although the RB7 appears to be the car to beat ahead of the start of the season in Australia, there remains a high chance that clever strategies in the race could yet prove to be more important. When asked by AUTOSPORT if the uncertainty about the tyre impact was a worry ahead of the Albert Park event, Horner said: "Not really

VW Beetle makes a bold bet on Skins [w/video]

Volkswagen's Black Beetle Commercial - Click above to watch video after the jump

Companies prefer spending ad dollars on TV shows that people are actually going to watch. Sometimes, it's simply a matter of buzz; if a lot of good or bad things are being said about a program, people are likely to tune in out of curiosity. Volkswagen is aware of this, and the automaker is betting that folks are going to tune into watch MTV's controversial new show Skins.

Declared too racy by some critics, Skins was a high-school drama that showed drug use and sex amongst teenagers. It was also apparently quite terrible, judging from the reviews found around the Internet. The show aired its season (and possibly series) finale this past Monday, and VW was on board with some advertising airtime.

The initial backlash against Skins was enough to send some top-tier advertisers running. Volkswagen was willing to gamble that enough hype had been generated and people would tune in to the season-ender. Able to grab more airtime than usual, the automaker double-dipped on its new Black Beatle commercial, which was first seen during Super Bowl XLV. Smart move for VW? Well, the Skins finale drew 1.2 million viewers, the most the show had since February 7, for whatever that's worth.

Click past the jump to watch Volkswagen's Black Beetle commercial, and you don't even have to sit through an episode of Skins beforehand.

Ferrari FF Crash
Ferrari FF crash - Click above to watch video after the jump

This is why we can't have nice things, CAR Magazine. Ferrari recently hosted a passel of journalists from around the globe in Italy to fully introduce the company's new FF to the world. You know, the sexy-as-sin shooting brake with a European price tag of £230,000? Yeah, that Ferrari FF.

Jethro Bovingdon showed up to represent the CAR crowd, but ran into a bit of trouble while trying to work up a video monologue and pilot the obscenely expensive Italian supercar through some narrow country roadwork at the same time.

Shortly after announcing that he intended to demonstrate "just how committed to the throttle you can be on a very twisty narrow road that shouldn't suit this car," Bovingdon managed to bash the FF off of a curb. According to CAR, the damage was limited to both wheels on the passenger side. We're guessing the repairs likely cost more than the tester's fancy sunglasses, but not by much.

Hit the jump to check out the in-cabin video of the incident for yourself. Thanks for the tip, Throwback!

Japanese repair quake-ravaged road in just six days

Filed under:

Japan earthquake fixed road

Japan earthquake damaged roadDue to the extensive damage in Japan caused by the massive earthquake and resultant tsunami on March 11, many have questioned if the island nation can recover in a year, much less a few months. If the swiftness with which the Japanese can repair roads is any indication, we wouldn't bet against the country cleaning up this catastrophe in short order.

As a result of the quake, a 150-meter section of the Great Kanto Highway in Naka was absolutely obliterated, with massive chasms running right through the middle of the road. Work crews at the NEXCO road repair company sprang into action on March 17, working at a fevered pitch to help get their country on the road to recovery, literally. Amazingly, after only six days of labor, the road is silky smooth and ready for travel. Look at the the before and after photos above to see just how amazing this feat is.

Given the fact that road crews in the U.S. can spend three or more months repairing a single lane of concrete, only to leave the orange barrels on the road for another two weeks, we're blown away by this feat of engineering. Simply amazing.

Update on Japanese automakers recovering from earthquake

Prius production resumes, Honda further delays restarting plants

Japanese automaker news resulting from the March 11 earthquake is coming in fast and furious right now, so we've packaged the latest information in one convenient spot.

Toyota announced some good and bad news this week on the production front. The good news is that the company will resume limited production of the Prius, Lexus HS250h and CT 200h hybrids with all-new parts coming in. Eighteen other Toyota plants remain closed, however, through at least March 28, and the automaker has warned its assembly plants in North America that they could soon face parts shortages that interrupt production.

Honda has moved the restart date of its Japanese plants again from March 27 to April 3 or later. Among the vehicles affected are the Fit and CR-V. The company also says its research and development center will be closed for months due to extensive damage. Some of the work being done at the R&D facility has been moved to other Honda facilities in Japan.

Nissan restarted production in Japan on March 24, though the plants are using only existing parts stock with no new parts coming in. The company is studying whether its Tennessee engine plant could supply VQ V6 engines to Japan due to damages sustained at an engine plant in the quake zone. The automaker also lost 1,300 Infiniti models that were damaged at a Japanese port during the quake. CEO Carlos Ghosn claims 40 Japanese suppliers are still in trouble.

Mazda has been running some plants in Japan, though parts are starting to become scarce. The CX-7 and CX-9 are among the vehicles affected.

Subaru has postponed any production in Japan until at least March 28. In the U.S., the automaker has suspended overtime at its Indiana plant.

NASCAR star Jeff Gorvette will compete in CARS 2

Jeff Gordon as voice of Jeff Gorvette in Pixar's CARS 2
Jeff Gorvette from Pixar's CARS 2 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Our onslaught of CARS 2 character debuts continues this week with an exclusive reveal just for Autoblog readers. Pixar is letting us announce that NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon will make an appearance in the film as Jeff Gorvette, an up-and-coming Chevrolet Corvette C6.R that's "turning hoods wherever he competes."

More than just a cameo, Gordon's character will compete as a "respected competitor - and legitimate threat - at the World Grand Prix." Pixar makes no obvious connection to Gordon's actual roots in NASCAR, but the character of Jeff Gorvette is a Chevrolet and will wear #24 like Gordon's actual racecar, although obviously it isn't an Impala. We're not sure how the Corvette Racing team that just finished 3rd and 4th in this past weekend's season-opening 12 Hours of Sebring feels about having an oval racer portray its beloved C6.R GT2 car on film, but Pixar needed an accomplished road-racing car and probably wasn't interested in a character named Jeff Gimpala.

Darrell Cartrip from Pixar's CARS 2We're also privileged to announce that Darrell Waltrip will be returning as a character in CARS 2, reprising his role as racing announcer Darrell Cartrip, the "Kentucky-born #17 Chevrolet Monte Carlo known for his wild color commentary." He's graduated from being a Piston Cup announcer and will be on-hand to call the World Grand Prix in the sequel.

Check out both characters after the jump, including a video turntable of Jeff Gorvette. You can also view all of the new CARS 2 characters in our high-res gallery below that we continually update as new characters are announced.

Dovizioso adamant race will be better

Andrea Dovizioso admitted he was very disappointed to end Qatar Grand Prix qualifying only seventh on a grid led by his Honda team-mates Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa - but is adamant he can be up with Pedrosa at least on race pace. The Italian has been overshadowed by Stoner and Pedrosa since Honda expanded its works line-up to three bikes for this year.

Stoner full of confidence for rest of ?11

Casey Stoner says he is feeling extremely confident not just about the MotoGP season-opener but the whole year ahead, having carried his superb testing and practice form through to qualifying in Qatar. In his first race weekend as a works Honda rider, Stoner beat his team-mate Dani Pedrosa to pole having already been fastest in all three practice sessions. But having won at Losail for three straight years from 2007 to 2009, Stoner said he had been optimistic about this circuit anyway - and it was his likely form at Jerez and beyond that really excited him.

Japanese motorist's car engulfed by tsunami
Japanese tsunami footage from inside a car - Click above to watch the video after the break

Modern technology means that the world has an almost constant and unlimited amount of coverage of major news stories from all around the planet. That's certainly true of the massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan, especially since Japan is one of the most tech-happy countries in the world.

And so it comes as little surprise that at least one Japanese man had a camera running in his car as he attempted to flee the impending rush of water near the coastline. Suffice it to say that his plans to escape failed miserably. Thankfully, though, the man lived to tell the tale, as did his footage.

Click past the break to see a truly harrowing video of a Japanese motorist's car being engulfed by a two-meter tsunami. Again, this driver is truly lucky to have survived, and we know that hundreds if not thousands of Japanese citizens weren't so fortunate. Our thoughts remain with the survivors.

Limited Edition 1968 Steve McQueen Signature Mustang
Gateway Classic 1968 Steve McQueen Signature Mustang - Click above for high-res image gallery

Making a limited edition Ford Mustang based off of a famous movie car is nothing new, but Gateway Classic Mustang is taking a different approach. The St. Louis-based company has partnered with the Steve McQueen Estate to produce a modern rendition of the 1968 Ford Mustang featured in the movie Bullitt.

Each car starts out as an original '67 or '68 Mustang fastback and is fitted with a 450-horsepower V8, Keisler five-speed transmission, Baer brakes, American Racing wheels and BFGoodrich tires. The suspension has been worked over as well, with adjustable coilovers front and rear.

Gateway Classic Mustang says that they are currently taking orders for the Limited Edition Steve McQueen Mustang, and although pricing isn't listed, we imagine that they won't come cheap. You can read more details about the car in the press release after the jump, and be sure to check out the high-res gallery below.

Best winter still leaves RBR guessing

Red Bull Racing may having rounded off what it believes was its 'best ever' pre-season build-up at Barcelona this week, but the team insists it still does not know how it stacks up against the opposition.
